WhenWednesdaypremiered in 2022, it quickly became Netflix's most-watched English language show of all time, which led to a completely unsurprising renewal for Season 2. The series — from creatorsAlfred Gough and Miles Millar and executive producerTim Burton— provided a fresh spin on the Addams Family franchise, andJenna Ortegadazzled as the titular character. But we've been waiting for this new season for a couple years now, which has been frustrating — but there's a light at the end of this tunnel. Season 2 is currently in production, and not only will Ortega return as Wednesday Addams, but she will also serve as a producer.

"We can't wait to dive head first into another season and explore the kooky spooky world of Nevermore," show creators Gough and Millar told Tudumwhen the renewal was announced. "Just need to make sure Wednesday hasn't emptied the pool first."

As production kicks off, details about the show's next chapter are starting to come together. Where is the show filming, what's the release date, and who's going to be in Wednesday Season 2? Read on for everything we know, and check back often as we update this article with all the latest news.

WednesdaySeason 2 latest news

Lady Gaga, hot off the year's biggest flop in Joker: Folie a Deux, will appear in Wednesday Season 2 in an undisclosed role, per Entertainment Weekly. The pop star and actor has an unusual connection to the series thanks to viral videos that re-cut Wednesday's big dance sequence from Season 1 to the Lady Gaga song "Bloody Mary," which prompted Gaga to post her own TikTok in which she dressed up as Wednesday and did the dance herself. And now it's all coming full circle, with Gaga joining the cast of the series. Whether this is a substantial role or more of a cameo, we have no clue. But we're excited to find out.

Wednesday Season 2 release date

Netflix has released its full slate of content that it plans to release in 2024 — and Wednesday isn't on it. Don't worry; that doesn't mean the mega-hit series has been canceled. It just means you're going to have to wait until 2025 to watch it, asreported by Deadline.

Wednesday Season 2 production

Inan interview with Colliderpublished on Sept. 18, co-creator Alfred Gough confirmed the number of episodes Burton is directing inWednesdaySeason 2. "He's doing four. He's doing half the season like he did in Season 1," the co-showrunner said. Burton directed the first four episodes ofWednesdaySeason 1. No specifics have been shared about which of the Season 2 episodes Burton will direct, but Gough's comment indicates that the second season will include eight episodes, just as the first season did.

In May, Netflix confirmed that production on Wednesday Season 2 had kicked off in Ireland. Deadline first reportedin November 2023 that the series would move to Ireland from Romania, where Season 1 was filmed. Why the change? Apparently some of the logistics of filming in Romania were too difficult, and talks of moving production elsewhere began during the filming of Season 1.

InVariety's Actors on Actors interviewin June 2023, Ortega shared that she will be taking on a producing role inWednesdaySeason 2 and teased what to expect. "We've decided we want to lean into the horror more," the actor said. "We're ditching any romantic love interest, which is really great. We're going to get bolder, more dark." Ortega also discussed being a producer for the first time, calling it a "natural progression."

"I tried to have as many conversations as possible with the writers," she said. "We'd decide what works and what doesn't." For the second season, Ortega said the conversations started earlier. "I'm just so curious: I want to see the outfits, new characters, scripts."

Wednesday Season 2 teases

On Sept. 19, Netflix released a behind-the-scenes video from the set ofWednesday, which promises that the second season will be "bigger and more twisted." Check it out above.

At Tudum: A Global Fan Event in June 2023,Netflix released a videoofWednesdaystars Ortega,Emma Myers,Joy Sunday, and Hunter Doohan reacting to fan theories. They discussed what's next for Joseph Crackstone's ring, Wednesday and Tyler Galpin's relationship, and more. They also teased that Season 2 will add a new member of the Addams family, whom we now know to be Grandmama, played by Joanna Lumley.

In November 2022, TV Guide talked to Wednesday showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar about Season 1's ending and what it means for Season 2. Here are highlights from the interview, and you can read the full story here.

It's unlikely — but not impossible — for Principal Larissa Weems to return. We didn't see Principal Larissa Weems (Gwendoline Christie) regain consciousness after being poisoned by Ms. Thornhill, and things were looking bleak for the head of Nevermore Academy. She's officially dead — though how dead remains to be seen.

The showrunners said they wanted to explore how Weems' passing would impact Wednesday."We like the idea that people die in this world, that there are real sacrifices and there's loss — and that Wednesday has to react to that," Millar said. "For us, the fact that we could kill such a significant character, it was important that we did that."

"That said, it's a supernatural show, there are always ways people can return," Millar added "Never say never, but at this point, she's definitely dead."

Millar left the door open, but the show's actors weren't fully convinced that Weems' demise is permanent. "I feel like Larissa Weems would never be dominated by something as commonplace as death," Christie told TV Guide. And asked whether the audience should believe Weems is dead, Jenna Ortega said, "I don't even believe that one." She added: "I can't, I love Gwendoline Christie too much. I refuse to accept that as the truth."

Christie was not listed as one of the show's returning stars when the Season 2 cast was announced. Still, we're holding out hope that Weems will somehow shape-shift her way back from the grave.

The showrunners hope to reveal more about the stalker in the second season. "We know who it is, we can't tease who it is," Millar said. "We certainly have big plans and lots more stories to tell in terms of Wednesday and her friends." Gough said he can't share whether viewers have already met the person who is the stalker.

White's character was one of Wednesday's love interests in Season 1, and the series is expected to move away from the love triangle storyline in Season 2. White was accused of sexual assault in since-deleted social media posts in January 2023; he hasdenied the allegations.

Wednesday Season 1 recap

The first season of the series, directed and executive produced by Burton, ended with a big W for Wednesday. Not only did the psychic teen save Nevermore Academy and its outcasts from the resurrected Joseph Crackstone, but she revealed the true identity of Marilyn Thornhill (Christina Ricci) — who had been behind much of this season's terror. And while most of the mysteries from the show's first eight episodes have been solved, some big questions remain. Namely, who is the stalker continuing to follow Wednesday's every move?

In light of the news that the show will be toning down the romance, we're eager to find out what's next for the relationships that Wednesday formed across the first season. Of course, there's the matter of Tyler Galpin, the seemingly harmless "normie" who became romantically interested in Wednesday but turned out to be the monstrous Hyde she had been after. Tyler, in his Hyde form, fought a wolfed-out Enid in Wednesday's final episode and was defeated. We don't know what's next for the character, but he ended the series waking up in a car, albeit in chains, so his story isn't done yet.
